BREAKING: Saif al-Islam Gaddafi Assassinated in Zintan, Libya
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the most prominent son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has been killed in Libya, according to officials and multiple local media reports.
His death was confirmed on Tuesday by his lawyer, Khaled al-Zaidi, and political adviser, Abdulla Othman, who announced the development in separate Facebook posts. No official details were provided on the circumstances surrounding the killing.
Libyan news platform Fawasel Media quoted Othman as stating that the 53-year-old was attacked and killed at his residence in Zintan, a town approximately 136 kilometres southwest of Tripoli. The report said armed men stormed his home, raising renewed concerns over security in the region.
In a subsequent statement, Gaddafi’s political team described the incident as a “cowardly and treacherous assassination.” They alleged that four masked men forcibly entered the residence, shut down security cameras, and carried out the attack. The statement added that Saif al-Islam attempted to resist his attackers before he was killed.
Reacting to the incident, Khaled al-Mishri, former head of the Tripoli-based High State Council, called for an urgent and transparent investigation, stressing the need to uncover those responsible.
Although Saif al-Islam Gaddafi never held official government office, he was widely regarded as his father’s political heir. He was captured in Zintan following the 2011 uprising, released under a general amnesty in 2017, and had remained in the town until his death.
